Industry Overview

Nevada County is blessed with a diverse industrial base.  Historically, this has not been the case. In the 19th Century mining was the predominant industry, and in the 20th Century the timber industry prevailed.  Consequently, the economies suffered when setbacks occurred in each of these industries. Today the spectrum of industries is much more balanced, and therefore the economy is much more resilient.

In the mid-to-late 1950s, high technology was born in Nevada County with the influx of Charles Litton, Sr., Dr. Donald Hare, and others. The birth of the Grass Valley Group spawned an industry cluster in video broad-casting that is today considered world-class.

Tourism is an industry that is growing with leaps and bounds. The ski slopes in/around Truckee play a major role in the success of tourism, as does the significant number of cultural, recreational, and agricultural attractions throughout the rest of the County.

At the dawn of the 21st Century, renewable energy is an industry that appears to be taking off. With the emphasis on green technology, this burgeoning sector is poised to add significant jobs to the County in the  years to come.
